Biography
Dean and Sam first see Ash in Everybody Loves a Clown, when he is asleep on a pool table in the closed Roadhouse. Ellen wakes him up, explaining that Ash can help the boys find the demon. When Dean hands over John's notes, Ash is impressed with the information. He promises to have something in 51 hours and disappears into his room. When he emerges again, he has everything programmed into his computer. If the Yellow-Eyed Demon makes a reappearance, he'll know and let Dean and Sam know. Dean wants to look at the computer, but Ash is protective and glares so Dean backs off. Sam is impressed, and Ash tells him he went to MIT. Ash picks up Dean's beer to finish it off, as Dean and Sam head out to finish something up.
In Dark Side of the Moon, Ash picks up the angel chatter on his computer rig, and heads out to find Dean and Sam to bring them back to his slice of heaven dressed as a wrestler with a pull on mask and cape. He informs them that they've been dead more often than anybody else, and he's talked with them each time they died but they've always been resurrected, which messes with their memories so they don't remember talking with Ash. They tell him that Ellen and Jo are dead, that they went out fighting. He manages to find a shortcut to the Garden. Drawing the symbols on the door, he warns the boys Zachariah will have all the doors to the Garden covered, so be careful. He opens the door, and the boys step through.

Quotes
- Ash: Come on. This crap ain't real. There ain't nobody can track a demon like this.
Dean and Sam exchange a look.
Sam: Our Dad could.
Ash: These are nonparametrics statistical overviews. Cross-spectrum correlations. I mean... damn. They're signs. Omens. Uh, if you can track 'em, you can track this demon. You know, like crop failures, electrical storms. You ever been struck by lightning? It ain't fun. 2.02 Everybody Loves a Clown
- Dean: Hey, man?
Ash: Yeah.
Dean: By the way I, uh, dig the haircut.
Ash: All business up front... party in the back. 2.02 Everybody Loves a Clown
- Sam: Ash, where did you learn to do all this?
Ash: M.I.T. Before I got bounced for... fighting.
Sam starts to grin.
Sam: M.I.T.?
Ash: It's a school in Boston. 2.02 Everybody Loves a Clown

- Pink Flamingos movie - "It's nowhere around. At least, nowhere I can find. But if this fugly bastard raises its head, I'll know. I mean, I'm on it like Divine on dog dookie."
Trivia
- "It's funny, because they'd written it a different way when I auditioned. And then I got the part and we filmed some of it and it didn't work, so they ended up changing the character a little bit. Before, Ash was a kind of drunkard, a fumbling, Jack Sparrow-type character. He was kind of loopy. He was a little bit of a medium - they had him as a psychic, and it didn't work. So, they switched him over to a little more serious, with computers and whatnot." - Chad LindbergSupernatural Companion Season 2, pg 140
- The writers embraced the altered version of Ash, especially consulting producer Ben Edlund, who wrote a scene where Ash greets Sam in the nude. "We all had a hard time keeping it together," Chad recalls with a chuckle.Supernatural Companion Season 2, pg 140
- Working with Samantha Ferris was "a riot", and "Jared and Jensen are the two sweetest guys in the world", he did occasionally have to concentrate on his lines. "Sometimes the scientific dialogue was a little challenging to get out." - Chad LindbergSupernatural Companion Season 2, pg 140
- After Ash's death, some fans started a "Bring Back Ash" campaign.Supernatural Companion Season 2, pg 140
