Officer Daniel Gunderson and Officer Walter Kelly were called out on a 10-62, breaking and entering. They arrived at the asylum in the evening and split up to investigate. Gunderson found the three kids and sent them on their way, calling for Kelly to meet up. After they left, they clocked out for the night.
Gunderson heard about Kelly shooting his wife and himself later.
Gunderson, a week later, is trying to relax at a bar when a reporter who identifies himself as Ted Nugent from The Chicago Tribune is all up in his face asking questions about Kelly. Another guy tosses the reporter out, and they sit down to talk and have a few beers. He is pretty decent, and Gunderson tells him all about the legend of the asylum. Also tells him there was no reason for Kelly to shoot his wife, there were no problems. Sure, they had a few disagreements, but they had been talking of having kids.
