In Phantom Traveler, Jerry Panowski mentioned that John and Dean Winchester dealt with a poltergeist, which had practically torn his house apart. He also claimed that if it weren't for the Winchesters, he probably wouldn't be alive.
In Home, the poltergeist moves in when a wound was left from the evil that visited the Winchester home many years ago. When Jenny Cooper moves in with her two children, it starts to manifest with flickering lights, and scratching noises. The Winchesters visit.
The poltergeist mangles the plumber's hand, and traps Ritchie in the refrigerator. The Winchesters bring Missouri Moseley, who investigates and declares there's a poltergeist. They bring hex bags that evening to place in the walls to purify the home, to rid it of the poltergeist.
It tries to fight back by pushing a dresser against Missouri in the basement, and throwing knives at Dean in the kitchen, both of which has limited success. It is able to wind a lamp cord around Sam's neck, almost killing him before Dean finishes putting the hex bag in the wall. The blinding flash of white light seems to indicate the poltergeist is gone.
However, later that night the poltergeist is strong enough to grab the bed and shake it with Jenny on it. It also holds the door close, so she is unable to escape. Dean and Sam come in to rescue Jenny and her children. Dean kicks the bedroom door open to rescue Jenny, and they make it outside. Sam makes it downstairs with the children, telling the girl to take her brother outside before the poltergeist grabs Sam and drags him through the house, crashing into the table in the kitchen. After the girl takes the boy outside, the front door is slammed shut. Dean tries to kick in the front door, but is unsuccessful this time; he resorts to an axe to chop a hole in it to crawl though. Meanwhile Sam is pulled against the wall before being thrown into the cabinets. He falls to the floor. Staggering to his feet, he is violently thrown and pinned against a wooden door. He tries to move different parts of his body, but with limited success.
Mary's spirit shows up in fire form, as does Dean with a shotgun. Sam prevents Dean from shooting Mary, who changes and has a tender moment with her sons. She then turns to the poltergeist and says, "You, get out of my house. And let go of my son." She changes back to her fire form, charges the poltergeist on the ceiling, and Mary destroys it and herself.
A ghost that manifests itself by moving and influencing inanimate objects. Reports of poltergeist activity typically feature heavily on raps, bumps, thumps, knocks, footsteps and bed-shaking, all without a discernible point of original or physical reason for occurrence. Many accounts also detail objects being thrown about the room, furniture being moved, and even people being levitated.
