In 1835, Samuel Colt created a Colt revolver that can kill anything. The legend, from Dead Man's Blood, says that it was made when Halley's Comet was overhead, and the same night those men died at the Alamo, that he made it for a hunter on horseback. He also made thirteen bullets special for the Colt. The Colt was used a half dozen times before the gun disappeared, along with the hunter.
In All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 2, it was mentioned how Samuel Colt built five different frontier churches, along with private railway lines connecting the different churches laid out in a one hundred square mile Devil's Trap in southern Wyoming. Demons can't cross it, because he was trying to protect a crypt - a devil's gate to Hell. The key to the gate? The Colt revolver.
On March 5, 1861 in Frontierland, Samuel Colt is drinking at his desk, when two gentlemen show up looking for him. They are shown to be demons, who are demanding the devil's gate be open. Samuel tells them to walk away, but they threaten him, so he shoots them with the Colt. He takes them outside and buries them. Less than an hour later, a giant gentleman shows up and Samuel throws holy water on him to be sure he's not a demon. He introduces himself as Sam Winchester, a hunter from 2011, and proves it by handing over a magic brick. Sam claims Samuel shoots a Phoenix in about 3 hours, but Samuel is retired and out of the business. Sam tells him that he's a hero in his time, and they need to kill the Phoenix for it's ashes to kill a monster they're hunting, so Samuel needs to stow his crap for a few hours or give Sam the gun. Samuel claims ignorance at first, then claims he lost the gun in a game a Stud, but Sam calls him on it, explaining how he sees 2 sets of boot prints and smells of sulfur. Samuel admits Sam is correct, showing him the gun, but thinks Sam is too young to be burdened. Sam tries to get Samuel to come fight, but Samuel is done, and it doesn't matter what happens. Sam demands the gun, and eventually Samuel hands it over. Sam leaves.
Later, Samuel heads after Sam and ends up in Sunrise, Wyoming. He doesn't find his Colt, but he does find the ashes of the Phoenix that Sam needed to kill the monster. He bottles up the ashes, and from the magic brick figures out the address and the date to send it to. Boxing up both ashes and magic brick, he leaves instructions with the post office as to the date to deliver it, and mails the package with a note. The note reads, "Dear Sam, I got this address and date off your thingamajig, and I thought the enclosed might come in handy. Regards, Samuel Colt."
