Each year the people of Burkitsville, Indiana, present it with a young man and woman as a sacrifice to ensure the prosperity of their town and its crops.
In April 2005 the annual sacrifice was Vince and Holly Parker. Vince's body became the scarecrow for the next year.
On Friday, April 14, 2006, Steve and Pauly were to be the next sacrifices. When the Scarecrow came to life, however, Dean stopped it from taking them. Saturday night Dean and Emily were tied up to become the sacrifices for the year. Sam shows up and unties them, but before they can completely escape, the townspeople surround them. The scarecrow comes to life, and takes Harley and Stacey Jorgeson, thereby satisfying the sacrifices for the next year.
Sunday morning, April 16, 2006, Sam, Dean, and Emily burn the sacred First Tree, killing the pagan god Vanir.
The god inhabits the form of a scarecrow made from the body of its previous victims and kills the couple with a hooked blade, or scythe.
