Chapter 1 records the descendants from Adam to Noah, the descendants of Noah's sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, by which the earth was populated, the descendants of Shem, Noah's oldest son, to Abraham and the descendants of Abraham's sons, Ishmael and Isaac. Ishmael had 12 sons; they formed the 12 tribes of Midian. The Moslems consider themselves descendants of Ishmael. Isaac had 2 sons, Esau and Jacob. Esau formed the nation of Edom; Jacob formed the nation of Israel.
