David Conquers Jerusalem

Click here to read I Chronicles 11.

The material here is repeated from II Samuel 5.

Chapter 11 records the elevation of David as King upon the death of Saul. It also tells of the capture of the castle at Zion (Jerusalem) from the Jebusites who had held the city from the Israelites for 250 years. It closes with a list of the great men of David's kingdom.

Finally David is anointed King of the combined tribes of Israel. He had reigned for 7 years over Judah at Hebron, here he becomes King of the United Kingdom of Israel.

Jerusalem, then called Jebus, had long been a thorn in the flesh to Israel. For 250 years they had occupied Canaan but could not take the city of Jebus. The conquest of that city became the goal of David. It was to be called "the City of David". The Jebusites that dwelled in the city, swore that David would never take it, but David promised whoever captured the city would be the Captain of his Army, so Joab, the son of Zeruiah took the challenge and conquered the city, and David dwelled in the Castle of Zion.

The chapter ends with a list of the great men who served David. The first edition of this list was in Second Samuel 23. The list here is very much the same accept those from verse 41 on are added. These men became known as "David's Mighty Men". These men were of many nations. One was an Ammonite, another a Moabite, many were Gentiles. Their wonderful achievements came by the power of God. Two killed 300 each, one killed two lion like men, one an Egyptian giant, and none of this would have been possible without God's blessing.
