David Establishes His Kingdom

Click here to read I Chronicles 14.

The material here is repeated from II Samuel 5.

Chapter 14 repeats all that is recorded in II Sam. 5 concerning the establishment of David's Kingdom, his 13 sons and his victory over the Philistines.

Here we see that in spite of the size and economy of David's Kingdom, he needed the help of a smaller neighbor. Hiram, King of Tyre, furnished David the materials and expertise necessary to build a house.

Now David perceived that since all was going well, that the Lord had approved of him as King of Israel so he took unto himself many wives and concubines. From these marriages David apparently had 19 sons born to him, 6 were born when he was in Hebron and 13 in Jerusalem. These do not include the sons of his concubines.

In this chapter we have record two campaigns the David had against the Philistines. When the Philistines heard that David had been established as King of Israel, they went to engage him in battle in the Valley of Raphaim. Before going out to meet them, David inquired of the Lord as to what success he would have. The Lord assured him that he would be victorious and David went up and defeated the Philistines. But the Philistines were not done with David, they assembled again and David again asked the Lord what he should do. This time the Lord gave David another battle plan He David to retreat and circle around by the mulberry trees where the Lord would signal them to attack by making a noise in the trees. This David did and again he defeated the Philistines.

And the fame of David went out into all the lands and the nations feared him.
