David's Desire to Build a Temple

Click here to read I Chronicles 17.

The material here is repeated from II Samuel 7.

Chapter 17 records the same information found in II Sam. Ch.7. Gods acceptance of David's desire to build Him a house and David's acceptance of God's wishes that this honor should go to his son Solomon.

Notice the conversation is between David and the Prophet Nathan. David, with the help of Hiram King of Tyre, built for himself a glamorous home made of cedar. It bothered him that he lived in such fine quarters and the Ark of the Covenant lay in a tent. He questioned Nathan about the possibility of him building a house for the Presence of God and the Ark. Nathan spoke without consulting the Lord and told David to do as he wanted to for the Lord was with him.

Well Nathan had to eat his words to David as the Lord told Nathan to tell David that the privilege of building His house would go to his sin, Solomon. The Lord had been with David, had taken him from shepherding sheep to ruler over His people, He had delivered David from all of his enemies, but He would establish David's son and make him King of Israel and he would build the house of the Lord. All this Nathan told David.

David heard Nathan's words and responded to the Lord in humility. "Who am I O Lord, surly you have done all these things for me and more now, therefore O Lord, let him whom you will establish do as you have commanded."
