Chapter 23 records David setting things in order for the building of the Temple and assigning duties, by "lot", to 38,000 Levites and his declaring his son, Solomon, as his successor.
David had grown old and had appointed his son Solomon as the new King of Israel. He assembled the Leaders of Israel for the coronation ceremony.
A census was taken of the men of the Tribe of Levi who were 30 years or older. The total was 38,000. David assigned 24,000 of them to supervise the work at the Temple. He assigned 6,000 as judges and 4,000 as Temple Guards. He also assigned 4,000 as musicians who would sing and phrase the Lord. Then he divided them into three divisions. The Gershom division, the Kohath division and the Merari division. Each named after one of the sons of Levi. Then he subdivided the divisions and named the leaders of those sub-divisions.
This census of the Tribe of Levi and the assignment of duties was one of the last things that David did.
