Assignment of Priests and Levites

Chapter 24 records the two classes of Priests and the 24 classes of Levites. Their offices and duties were established by "lot" without distinction of age or rank.

The Priests, the descendants of Aaron, were placed into two divisions named after two of Aaron's sons, Eleazar and Ithamar. Nadab and Abihu were also sons of Aaron but they died before their father and had no children. Zadok represented the Eleazar clan and Ahimslech represented the Ithamar clan. Then he divided the Eleazar clan into 16 groups and the Ithamar clan into 8 groups. This was done because there was more leadership ability in the descendants of Eleazar.

Tasks were assigned to various groups by the casting of lots. Two from the division of Eleazar and one from the division of Ithamar were assigned to each task. Twenty-four groups and their leaders were selected. Each group carried out a Temple duty assigned by the Lord.
