Chapter 28 records the farewell ceremonies of David, his solemn declaration of divine approval of Solomon as his successor and the one ordained to build the Temple. It also records his instructions to Solomon as to the "blueprint" for the building of the Temple and his plea to the people to be obedient to the Law and the God of their fathers.
David summoned all of his officials to Jerusalem. He rose and addressed them. He advised them that it had been his desire to build the Temple but God had not allowed him to do this because he had been a man that had shed much blood. He had, however, acquired all that was necessary to build the Temple.
He informed them that God had chosen him to be King of Israel and that his family would begin a dynasty that would rule Israel forever. God had blessed David with many sons and had ordained that Solomon would succeed David on the throne of the United Kingdom of Israel.
Then David turned to Solomon and said, "Here are the leaders of Israel and in the sight of God I am instructing you to search out every commandment of the Lord so that you may continue to rule this good land and leave it to your children to rule forever."
Then David gave Solomon the blueprint to the Temple and its surroundings. He also passed on the work of the various groups of Priests and Levites. He then specified the amount of gold needed for the furnishings in the Temple. He informed Salomon that every part of the blueprint for the Temple was given him by the hand of the Lord.
