David's Death

Click here to read I Chronicles 29.

Chapter 29 continues the farewell ceremonies with more instructions to the people. He urges them to contribute to the building of the Temple. This chapter lists all that they gave. He offers up prayer and sacrifices for the occasion and displayed great pomp and grandeur in his farewell address and the coronation of Solomon, to which Matthew Henry, in his commentary says, "It is hard to say which shined brighter, the setting of the sun (David) or the rising of the sun (Solomon)."

Then David after addressing his son Solomon, turned to the entire assembly and reminded them that Solomon was still young and inexperienced and the work that he had laid out for him to do was enormous. He will need their complete cooperation.

He then advised them that he was leaving all of his private fortune to aid in the construction of the Temple and further told them of the contribution of others to aid in this. Ophir had contributed $85,000 in gold and $20,000,000 in silver. The clan leaders and the heads of the Tribes plus the army officers and administration officers had pledged $145,000,000 in gold, $50,000 in foreign currency, $30,000,000 in silver, 800 tons of bronze and 4,600 tons of iron.

Then David, in the presence of the whole assembly, phrased God for all that He had done for him and all that He had done for Israel. Then he turned to the people and told them to phrase God also and they did, bowing low before the Lord and the King.

The next day they brought a thousand young bulls, a thousand rams and a thousand lambs for a burnt offering. Then they feasted and drank before the Lord with great joy. Then God anointed Solomon to take the throne of his father David and He prospered him greatly and all Israel obeyed him.

David died in 965 BC. at the age of 69. He had reigned over Israel for 40 years.
