Chapter 23 continues Saul's search for David. One day David got word that the Philistines were at Keil-ah robbing the Israelites of their harvested grain. Keil-ah was south west of Bethlehem in the tribe of Judah in the area bordering on the land of the Philistines. David consulted the Lord and the Lord told him to go and help the people. His men were hesitant because it was so close to Philistia but they went anyway and with the help of the Lord, they slaughtered the Philistines.

When Saul heard that David was at Keil-ah, he mobilized his army and headed there. David consulted the Lord through the Priest Abiathar and learned that Saul was really coming and that the people of Keil-ah would turn him over to Saul when he came. So David left Keil-ah and he and his men roamed the countryside and lived in caves.

Saul continued to search for David but the Lord would not let him find him. Jonathan went and found David and encouraged him and told him not to be afraid because his father, Saul, would never find him.

David was staying at Horesh in the hill country of Ziph. The people there betrayed David and told Saul that he was there. David heard of this and went further into the Wilderness of Maon. Saul followed and was very close to David, only a mountain separated them when word got to Saul that the Philistines were raiding Israel again so he had to leave his search for David and go fight the Philistines.
