Chapter 24 records David's opportunity to kill Saul and his reluctance to do so. After the battle with the Philistines, Saul, again, does after David. He went into a cave to relieve himself not knowing that David and his men were in there. When David's men saw him, they wanted to kill him but David would not let them. Instead David sneaked up behind Saul and got close enough to cut off the bottom of his robe. As Saul was leaving, David went out and called to him. Bowing, he told Saul how close he had come to death there in the cave. He told him to look at his robe. When Saul seen what had happened to his robe he was filled with remorse for he realized that David could have killed him but choose not to. David had repaid Saul's treachery with compassion. He also realized that David would be the next King of Israel and he asked for compassion for his family. David agreed and Saul went home and David went back into the cave.
