Chapter 26 records another attempt by Saul to take David's life. The men of Ziph (S-E Judah) went to Gibeah, Saul's home, and told Saul that David was hiding out on the Hill of Ha-chil-ah near Ziph. Ziph was about 22 miles from Gibeah. Saul took 3,000 of his troops down to Ziph to hunt David down. They camped near where David was hiding.

One night David and some of his men slipped over to Saul's camp to look around. He observed Saul and Abner, the Commander-in-Chief of Saul's army, asleep surrounded by soldiers. David asked for a volunteer to go with him into the camp and Abi-shai volunteered. Together they went into the camp where Saul was lying asleep. Abi-shai wanted to put a spear through him but David would not allow it, instead David took Saul's spear and water jug and left without anyone seeing them, because the Lord had cause them to have a deep sleep. David and his men climbed a mountain slope opposite Saul's camp and shouted down and awoke Saul and Abner. David taunted Abner about his lack of protection of Saul. "While you were asleep we came in and took the King's spear and water jug. We could have killed you both. You ought to die for you were lack in your duty." Saul recognized David's voice and David questioned him as to why he was trying to kill him. Saul confessed that what he was doing was wrong and he asked David to forgive him and come back to the Palace with him. David declined but he did return Saul's belongings back to him and then went on his way. Saul went back to Gibeah.
