Chapter 29 shows David marching with the Philistines against Israel. Meanwhile the Philistines were preparing to mount their attack against Israel. They assembled at Aphek in N-W Ephraim. This was the same town where the Philistines defeated the Israelites before and stole the Ark of the Covenant (Ch. 4) 44 years before. It was 30 miles N-W of Jerusalem. It was often called Anti-patris. It furnished water to Jerusalem up until the time of Christ.

The Israeli encamped at the Springs of Jezreel, some 35 miles to the north near Megiddo. The Philistine Army left Aphek and headed for the Plains of Jezreel. David and his men, who were allowed to join in with the Philistines, remained in the rear with King Achish. David, for some time now, had fought along side the Philistines against their enemies, but now they were going up against David's countrymen. The Philistine Generals were afraid of David. They felt that he might turn against them in this battle. So they demanded that he return to Ziklag and take his men with him. The King apologized to David and David went home to Ziklag and the Philistines headed for Jezreel.
