Chapter 8 records several arrangements made by Solomon concerning:

  1. The Canaanite workman. Those who had lent their skills in the building of the Temple were welcomed to live in Israel and promised jobs for their keep.
  2. His wife. His wife was an Egyptian and Solomon would not allow her in his Palace.
  3. Temple services. Solomon instituted services at the Temple according to the Laws of Moses.
  4. Foreign trade. He arranged, by personal visits, trade with the other nations. He realized, by his wisdom, that even though they were the "children of God", chosen by His Grace, there was still much that could be learned from others.

It was now 20 years since Solomon had become King of Israel and the great building projects of the Temple and his royal palace were completed. He had turned his efforts toward the rebuilding the cities the King Hiram of Tyre had given him and he relocated some of the people of Israel into them. He begin the practice of conscripting slave labor from the nations that they had not completely wiped out.

He built a palace for his Egyptian wife some place outside the area of Jerusalem that was called the City of David as this area also housed the Temple and in the temple was the Ark of the Covenant and she could not live in that area.

Then he went to the seaport towns of Ezion-geber and Eloth in Edom and launched a fleet of ships that had been presented to him by King Hiram. These ships were manned by experienced sailors that worked along with Solomon's men.
