Chapter 12 contains a full account of the reign of Rehoboam, King of Judah (931-913). After Egypt's defeat of Judah, because of their disobedience, Rehoboam established a time of peace, but he never did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord. He never served the Lord, he never sought the Lord and he never prayed to the Lord.

When Rehoboam was at the height of his popularity, he ceased to serve the Lord. As a result, King Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem in the fifth year of the reign of Rehoboam. He quickly conquered Judah's fortified cities and arrived at Jerusalem. The Prophet Shemaiah met with all the leaders of Judah for they had all fled to Jerusalem for safety and he told them that it was because of their sins that the Lord had abandoned them to the King of Egypt.

Upon hearing this, the King and the leaders of Judah confessed their sins and allowed that the Lord had a right to do as He did and asked for forgiveness. Because they had humbled themselves before the Lord, He sent word by the Prophet that he would spare them but they would have to pay tribute to Egypt as their judgment.

So King Shishak conquered Jerusalem and he came in and took all the treasurers from the Temple and the King's Palace. Rehoboam reigned for 17 years in Jerusalem, but he was an evil king. During that time, there were continued wars between him and Jeroboam, King of Israel. Rehoboam died and he was buried in Jerusalem and his son Abijah became King of Judah.
