Chapter 14 begins the reign of Asa, the son of Abijah (911-870). It records:

  1. His devotion to the Lord.
  2. His government policy.
    1. No work, no pay.
    2. Peace by reason of strength.
    3. Government by representatives.
    4. The prosperity of Judah.
    5. His victory over the army of the Ethiopians.

King Abijah was buried in Jerusalem and his son Asa became the new King of Judah. There was peace in the land for the first 10 years of his reign. He was careful to obey the Lord and he demolished all the pagan altars. During this time of peace, Asa fortified his cities with walls, towers and gates. His Judean Army was 300,000 strong; his army of Benjaminites was 280,000 strong.

The army of Ethiopia, 1,000,000 strong, attacked the forces of Asa in the Valley of Zephathat. Asa cried out unto the Lord and the Lord and the Lord defeated the Ethiopians and the army of Judah chased them to Gerar and completely wiped them out so as not one man remained. Then the army of Judah carried off vast quantities of plunder collected from the near by cities. Before returning to Jerusalem, they destroyed the cattle tents and captured great herds of sheep and camels.
