Asa's Reign Continued

Chapter 15 records more of Asa's merits. Idols were destroyed in Judah and laws were established concerning punishment of idolaters. The courts were reformed and justice prevailed.

As Asa was returning from the battle with the Ethiopians, a Prophet by the name of Azariah came out to meet him. He told Asa that as long as he worshipped and obeyed the God of Israel that he would be successful in all his endeavors. But he warned Asa that for a long time now Judah had not worshipped the true God nor had there been a "true priest" to teach them. They had lived outside God's Laws but still whenever they turned to Him for help He was always there.

When King Asa heard these words he destroyed all the pagan idols in the land and rebuilt the altar unto the Lord in front of the Temple. Then in the fifteenth year of his reign, he summoned all the people of Judah and Benjamin and those of other tribes that had stayed in Judah when the kingdom divided and they sacrificed unto the Lord 700 oxen and 7,000 sheep, part of the plunder that they had captured in the battle. Then they entered into a covenant to serve the Lord and Him only would they serve and anyone who refused would die. He even removed his mother from being the Queen Mother because she had made an idol to the pagan god Asherah.

He then brought back into the Temple the gold and silver bowls that had been dedicated to the Temple. So there was no more war until the thirty fifth year of King Asa's reign.
