The End of Asa's Reign

Click here to read II Chronicles 16.

Chapter 16 records the end of the reign of Asa. He made a foolish treaty with Benhadad, the pagan King of Syria, and chose to rely on that instead of the Lord. For this, God sent Hanani, the Seer, to condemn Asa. Asa became ill with a disease of his feet, probably the gout, and he died. Despite his unfaithfulness to God, the people still had great respect for him and they gave him a great funeral.

In the thirty sixth year of the reign of Asa King of Judah, King Baasha, King of Israel, declared war on him. In response to this, Asa took gold and silver and bought the help of Benhadad, King of Syria. Benhadad attacked Israel and Baasha called off his attack on Judah. At that time the Prophet Hanani came to Asa and said to him, "Because you put your trust in the King of Syria instead of the Lord your God, from now on you shall have wars." Asa became angry with the Prophet and he threw him into jail. Then Asa oppressed the people from that time on.

In the thirty ninth year of his reign, he became seriously ill with a disease of the feet and he went to doctors with the problem instead of the Lord. So he died in the forth first year of his reign and was buried in Jerusalem.
