Chapter 17 records the life and reign of Jehoshaphat, son of Asa (873-848). It was said of him, "He walked in the ways of his father David." He was one of the "better" Kings of Judah. The chapter tells of:

  1. The establishment of Jehoshaphat upon the throne.
  2. His personal relationship with the Lord.
  3. His promotion of religion in the kingdom.
    1. He removed false teachers.
    2. He sent out true teachers.
    3. He used the Elders of the tribes and the Levites to teach and encourage true worship, using the Books of Moses.
  4. His good position with his neighbors and their fear and respect for him.

Lastly, it tells of his army and the fortifications he established throughout Judah. Matthew Henry notes: "It was not the formidable army that impressed his neighbors, but the fear of God that fell upon them when Jehoshaphat reformed the country and set up a preaching ministry."
