Chapter 36 concludes the history of Judah. Jehoahaz reigned only 3 months. He was taken prisoner to Egypt and that's the last we ever hear of him. Egypt set another of Josiah's sons. Jehoiakim, upon the throne of Judah.
Jehoiakim became a puppet of Egypt, until Babylon defeated Egypt and then he became a puppet to Babylon. He was condemned by the Prophet Jeremiah, who prophesied the downfall of Judah to the Babylonians. He attempted to rebel against Babylon and was killed. He was given an "unmourned" burial. At his death, his son, Jehoiachin, became king.
Jehoiachin became king of Judah at the age of 18 and ruled for 3 months and 10 days. He was then taken captive to Babylon. He was released 37 years later and spent his remaining days in Egypt.
When Jehoiachin was taken prisoner to Babylon, his son, Zedekiah, became King of Judah. He was 21 years old when he became king and he ruled for 11 years. He took an oath of allegiance to Babylon. In the 10th. year of his reign, the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and Zedekiah saw his sons murdered, had his own eyes put out and was carried, in chains, to Babylon where he died.
All this, according to Ezra the Prophet, was the judgment of God upon the people of Judah for despising His Word and mocking His messengers. The Temple was destroyed, the city was destroyed and all the treasures of Judah were taken to Babylon.
Second Chronicles does not end on a sad note. The destruction of Jerusalem was in 587-586 BC. In 539 BC., Cyrus, King of Persia, conquered Babylon and the next year he decreed that all Jews could go back to Judah. Most had been captive some 50 years, but some, who had been captured earlier, were there 70 years.
