This second letter is stated to have been written by the "Elder" (Presbyteros). In all probability, the "Elder" is the Author of First John also.
The letter is addressed to "the elect lady and her children". It is not known if this was a Christian Matron and her family or a church. The early churches met in homes and the initial membership was the family unit and thus the churches retained strong associations.
The letter echo's the teachings in First John which emphases the "commandment to love". It issues a strong warning about roving false teachers who were endangering true Christian doctrines, not only by opposing them but also by teaching false ones in their place. These false teachers were not to be given hospitality.
