Josiah, the Sixteenth King of Judah

Click here to read II Kings 22.

Josiah was only 8 years old when he became the 16th. King of Judah. He reigned for 31 years. He was considered a "good king". In the 18th. year of his reign, he sent instructions to Hil-kiah, the High Priest, to take the money that came into the Temple and give it to the building maintenance people for repairs. In the process of making repairs, a scroll was discovered with God's law written upon it. Josiah's Secretary read the scroll to him. When he heard what was written, he tore his cloths and great fear came upon him. He realized that neither he nor his ancestors had obeyed the Lords Laws. He sent Hil-kiah, the High Priest, and others to find Hul-dah, the Prophetess, to ask her to inquire of the Lord. She did and this was the word from the Lord: "I am going to destroy Jerusalem and it's people just as you read in the scroll, for they have put me aside and worshipped pagan gods. But because you have humbled yourself before me in contrition, the death of this nation will not occur until after you are gone." This was the message that they took back to the king.

Josiah made a covenant with God to keep all that was written in the scroll. He also instituted many religious reforms. He celebrated the Passover which had not been properly celebrated since Samuel was Judge of Israel.
