Chapter 9 tells of David keeping his promise to Jonathan concerning his family. In First Samuel Chapter 20, David promised Jonathan that he would look out after his family as long as he lived. So now he remembers that promise and inquires if any of Saul's family is still living. He contacts one of Saul's servants by the name of Ziba and learns that one of Jonathan's sons, a lame man by the name of Mephibosheth was still living in the city of Lodebar (Debir) at the home of a man by the name of Ma-chir. (Debir was east of the Jordan River in Gilead.)
David sent for Nephibosheth and restored all of the lands of his grandfather Saul to him. Then he summoned Ziba and his family of 15 sons and 20 servants, and put them in charge of this land to farm it and produce food. Mephibosheth lived in David's palace and ate at his table.
