Chapter 1 credits Amos as the author, inspired to write about conditions in Israel during the time when Uzziah was King of Judah (790 - 739 BC.) The charge was against Damascus, Syria; they had transgressed Israel three or four times. (In the study of numbers in the Bible, one or two means "a few", three or four, means "many".) Palestine, Tyre, Edom and Ammon are also charged with cruelty to the people of Israel.
