Chapter 6 records the mistaken position of a people who tried to ignore Amos's warning on the basis of past blessings, to try to make God's threatening appear trivial based on their being chosen above other nations in the past. We see Amos, in the chapter trying to overcome this false idea and to get the people to see the severity of his threatened judgments.
God, through the Prophets, had for 350 years continued to warn these people of the judgments that would come if they continued to disobey Him. His delay was mistakenly taken for tolerance. The time was near when God would no longer delay the judgment that had always been promised for disobedience and sin. This weighed heavily upon Amos and he tried every way to get them to see this.
