In this chapter God's judgment is temporally turned back by the prayers of Amos, but in time, God's patience is exhausted and the people are rejected and sentenced to utter ruin.
A man by the name of Amaziel, a priest at Bethel trys to get rid of Amos because of his condemnation of Israel. Amos justifies his condemnation on the basis that he was a called Prophet of God and he was only telling the people what the Lord had told him. He condemns Amaziah for his opposition to his prophesies and prophesies the God would bring ruin upon him and his family.
So we see here a shepherd from Tekoa, Amos, putting to shame a priest from Bethel, Amaziel, by authority of God.
