Chapter 8 records a vision that Amos had. He saw a basket of summer fruit. It signified the coming of God's judgment just as the fruit signified the coming of winter. The end had come upon the people of Israel. The songs of the Temple would be replaced with cries of pain and there will be many dead bodies everywhere. A famine of God's Word will be brought upon the land of Israel because of their idolatry, but even this would not bring them to repentance.
