Chapter 6 contains the story of Daniel in the lion's den. Darius took over the kingdom and divided it into 120 Provinces, each with a Governor. There were 3 Presidents that was over the 120 Governors. Daniel was one of those Governors. Those who were under Daniel were very envious of him and sought to find some fault with which to condemn him. They approached the king and suggested to him that he make an ordinance that anyone that prays to any god for 30 days accept the king, would be cast into the lion's den. Darius, out of pride, signed the ordinance. Now according to the law of the Medes and the Persians, any law signed by the king could not be revoked, not even by the king.
The chapter continues with the plight of Daniel who is now aware of the king's ordinance, but never the less, he went to his room, and as was his custom, kneeled and faced Jerusalem and prayed. The men who were envious of him came and found him praying and went and reported him to the king. The king was much distressed because he liked Daniel and would have spared him but was reminded that such an order could not be revoked. The king was very angry with himself and spent the rest of the day trying to determine a way to save Daniel. In the evening the men came to the king and told him that there was nothing he could do, he had signed the law and it could not be changed. So the king gave the order for Daniel's arrest and he was taken and put into the lion's den. A stone was placed over the entrance so no one could rescue Daniel from the lions.
The king returned to the palace and went to bed without dinner. He couldn't sleep all night. Very early the next morning he went out to the lion's den. He called out in anguish, "Daniel, servant of the living God, was your God able to deliver you from the lions?" Then he heard a voice, "Your Majesty, my God has sent His Angel to shut the lions mouth so they can't touch me." The king was full of joy and ordered that those who had accused Daniel be thrown into the lion's den along with their families.
Then the king proclaimed the following: "I decree that everyone shall tremble and fear before the God of Daniel in every part of my kingdom for his God is the living and unchanging God whose Kingdom shall never be destroyed."
So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius, the Mede, and Cyrus, the Persian.
