Click here to read Daniel 9.

Chapter 9 records a prayer that Daniel made for the restoration of the Jews to Jerusalem. The account occurs in the first year of the reign of Darius I in 522 B.C. shortly before Daniel's death. In this chapter Daniel is assured of the speedy release of the Jews out of captivity, but many years of punishment upon Jerusalem and the people of Israel, some 490 years, (seventy weeks of seven or seventy sevens) Actually verse 25 places it at 483 years from the time the commandment was given for the rebuilding of Jerusalem by Artaxerxes I of Persia in 445 B.C., to 38 AD. This was supposed to be the date of the redemption of the world by the promised Messiah. The death and resurrection of Christ occurred approx. 33 AD.
