Chapter 3 records the second nation to be conquered, Bashan and their King Og. Israel took possession of Bashan, all their cities and all of their possessions. This gave them control of all the rich country directly east of the Jordan River.
Moses divided this land up into three parcels. The south was given to the Tribe of Reuben. The north was given to the Tribe of Manasseh. the middle was given to the Tribe of Gad.
Then Moses encouraged his successor, Joshua, to consider what God had done for them and what He had promised to do. Moses prayed that God might allow him to go over into the Promise Land, but God said no and commanded him to speak no more of this matter, however, the Lord did promise him a look at the land from Mt. Pisgah. Why didn't God allow Moses to go into the Promise Land? Read again the account in Num. 20:8-12, where Moses disobeyed God by striking the rock with his rod instead of just speaking to it as God had ordered him to do.
