The Purpose of the Law

Click here to read Deuteronomy 6.

Chapter 6 records the charge to Moses and to the people of Israel to be sure to maintain their religion in the land of Canaan. He stressed obedience to God and love of God. He cautioned them against idolatry. He closed with instructions for them to give to their children.

This chapter gives the purpose for all the Laws: (verse 2) "The purpose of these Laws is to cause you, your sons and your grandsons, to reverence the Lord your God by obedience."

Notice what the Lord had given:

  1. Cities that they hadn't built.
  2. Wells that they hadn't dug.
  3. Vineyards and olive trees that they hadn't planted.

But all this came with a warning: "Beware, less when you eat your fill and prosper, that you do not forget who it was that gave them to you. Then Moses reminded them:

  1. Do not worship the gods of your neighbors.
  2. Do not anger God by trying His patience.
  3. In the years to come, be sure and tell your children how God brought you out of bondage in Egypt and gave you this land.
