Israel's Social Differences
Chapter 14 points out areas where they must be different from their heathen
neighbors.
- Mourning. Never cut yourself or shave the front of your head as the
heathen do when they mourn.
- Food. Never eat any animal that the Lord has declared unclean. No
animal that does not have a cloven foot can be eaten. No sea animal
that does not have fins and scales can be eaten. Eleven birds are
listed as unclean. Most winged insects and nothing that has died a
natural death can be eaten.
- Worship. You must tithe all of your crops each year and bring it to
the sanctuary. If the sanctuary is to far, sell your tithe and
bring the money to the sanctuary.
- Every third year your tithe must go to charities, Levites, widows,
orphans and foreigners.
