Chapter 16 deals with "Three Yearly Festivals."

  1. The Festival of Unleavened Bread. A seven-day celebration beginning on the day of Passover. It began on the first day of the first month of the Hebrew religious calendar called Abib. They were to sacrifice either a lamb or an ox at the Lord's Sanctuary. For seven days, they were to eat unleavened bread.
  2. The Festival of Weeks. It took place 7 weeks after the harvest began. A "freewill" offering was to be made in proportion to their harvest. Invited to this festival were the Levites, widows and orphans.
  3. The Festival of Shelters. It lasted 7 days at the end of the harvest. It was to be a time of thanksgiving and rejoicing and was to include the Levites, widows and orphans. It was to be held at the Sanctuary, the place the Lord would designate.

Then Moses gave them a bit of judicial common sense. Never twist justice to benefit a rich man and never accept a bribe. Justice must prevail. If they were going to be successful in this land they must never erect shameful images or never erect a pillar or obelisk. The Lord hates these things.
