Chapter 17 deals with more words of advice. If you are going to be successful in this land, never sacrifice a sick or defective animal to the Lord your God. Then Moses goes back to the second commandment and reminds them of the necessity of worshipping God and Him only.
If you hear of someone who had broken this commandment, first, check out your information. If it is true, the person shall be taken outside the city and stoned to death. Never do this on the word of one witness, there must be two or more. If the charge is false, the man will be vindicated. The witness shall cast the first stone. If you cannot decide his guilt or innocence, he shall be taken before the Levites and the chief judge on duty at the time shall, upon hearing the evidence, make the judgment.
If and when you decide you want a king, be sure you select the man that God chooses. His qualifications are: Chosen of God, an Israelite, one who will not build up for himself a large stable of horses, one who does not have many wives and one who is not excessively rich.
When he made king, he must copy the Laws and keep them with him constantly, he must read them every day and he must respect God by obeying His commandments. This will keep him humble, it will keep him from turning away from God, it will ensure him having a long and good reign and it will assure him of sons that will follow him.
