Actions Toward Their Fellowman

Click here to read Deuteronomy 19.

Chapter 19 deals with the duties toward their fellowman. Three of the Commandments are dealt with here:

  1. The sixth, "Thou shall not kill".
  2. The eighth, "Thou shall not steal".
  3. The ninth, "Thou shall not bear false witness".

"Thou shall not kill." However, if someone should kill another by accident, three cities in Canaan will be set aside as "Cities of Refuge" where that person can take refuge from those who might be seeking retribution. This is a repeat of that found in Exodus 21.

"Thou shall not steal." Here the commandment is extended to cover fraud and perjury. Under frauds included here is a warning against the falsifying or movement of landmarks. Particularly mentioned are the boundaries of the inheritances of the Tribes in Canaan.

"Thou shall not bear false witness." Under perjury care should be made that no one is convicted on the word of a single witness. Three witnesses shall be required for conviction and if these witnesses were found to be false, the same punishment shall be given them as was given the defendant.
