Blessings and Curses

Click here to read Deuteronomy 28.

Chapter 28 is a large exposition on two words; blessings and curses. Moses describes the blessings of obedience and the curse of disobedience.

First the Blessings. These blessings are promised if they "hearken unto the Lord". They must observe and do all of His commandments. In return God will keep them safe and prosperous. This blessing will follow them wherever they go, at home or as they travel. Their participation in this blessing will depend upon their faith. Also God promised them large families and great wealth. Their fields will prosper and their livestock will grow in great numbers, and the Grace of God will make you a great nation and you will overcome your enemies.

As to the curses, God does not take this lightly. Condemned is disobedience, not keeping His commandments, refusing to listen to His warnings, deserting Him for idols and for this, a curse will come upon you. Cursed will be your fields, your enemies will overtake you; you will not be able to escape the curse. Sickness will fall upon your body and your soul.
