Chapter 4 begins the work of deliverance. When Mordecai learned of this decree, he put on sackcloth and ashes, went out into the city and mourned. There was great mourning throughout all the Provinces. When Esther heard about Mordecai she sent one of her attendants to find out why he was mourning. The attendant was told about the decree and he was also told to tell Esther that she had to go in to the King and plead for her people. When Esther received the message, she reminded Mordecai that no one went in to see the King unless they were summons on penalty of death, but Mordecai replied to her fears this way, " You may die either way, but at least you have a chance with the King." "Surly you have come into this world and into this Kingdom for such a time as this." This statement comes as close as anything to indicate God's hand in this story.
Esther sent word back to Mordecai to gather all the Jews in the capitol city of Susa and fast for 3 days. She would do the same, and then, though strictly forbidden, she would go in to see the King, if she died, she died. So be it. So Mordecai did as Esther told him to do.
