The Hand of God at Work

Click here to read Esther 6.

Chapter 6 shows the hand of God working in the story. The King could not sleep so he called one of his servants to bring the records of his reign for him to be read. God led the servant to read the account back in Chapter 2 how Mordecai had saved the Kings life by discovering a plot against him. On hearing this the King asked what honor had been done to Mordecai for this and was told that nothing had been done.

By daybreak the King was pondering what honor he could bestow upon Mordecai. Haman arrived early at the King's Court and was pleased when the King sent for him. He believed that this would give him the opportunity to get the King's permission to hang Mordecai. He appeared before the King but the King spoke first. The King asks Haman what honor might he suggest be bestowed upon someone that he favored. Haman, thinking that it was himself that the King was talking about, suggests that the King convey to this man the highest expressions of honor that could be bestowed upon a subject. The King agreed. Imagine the shock when Haman learns that it was Mordecai that the King was talking about and not himself.

Mordecai is summoned, dressed up in royal robes and paraded through the city as the King's favorite.

The chapter ends with the King and Haman off to the second banquet that Esther has prepared. Haman hoping to improve his position with the King and the King hoping to revive his drooping spirits.
