Chapter 8 records the good fortune that befalls Esther and Mordecai. With the death of Haman, his estate goes to the King. The King, in turn, gives it to Esther. Mordecai is given Hamans job, second only to the King. He also is to head Esther's estate. Only one thing was left to be done, reverse the decree to have the Jews killed. This appeared to be impossible. According to the Persian constitution, what was written in the King's name and sealed with the King's ring could not be reversed.
The King believed that he had found a way to take care of the situation. He issued an edict allowing the Jews to arm themselves and assemble on the day of their destruction.
