Chapter 3 tells of the calling of Moses. While tending the flocks of his father-in-law, Moses saw a bush that was aflame but was not consumed. He approached the bush and a voice spoke to him. The voice identified Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He told Moses that He had heard the cries of the people of Israel and that He would deliver them out of the hands of the Egyptians and take them back to the land of Canaan, and that he, Moses, was the one He was going to send to do that. This was apparently Moses' first contact with the "One true and living God", for he didn't even know His name. Moses made many excuses why he should not be sent but God prevailed and assured and instructed him as to what he was to do when he got back to Egypt. Basically, he was to do the following when he got there:
When he got there, he was to go to Pharaoh and ask him to let the people of Israel go on a three-day journey into the wilderness to make sacrifices to their God. God told Moses that he knew that Pharaoh would not let them go so He was prepared to do great wonders in the land of Egypt. Eventually Pharaoh will let you go and will give you all the silver, gold and clothing that you can carry.
