Instructions for Travel
Chapter 13 records the commands of dedication and consecration:
- Consecrated was to be the "first born" of all the people of Israel,
both man and beast.
- Dedicated was the Passover, the day the Lord brought them out of
Egypt.
- Repeated were the instructions concerning unleavened bread and the
command to tell each succeeding generation, the story of the
Passover and why they observed it.
- Promised was the Land of Canaan. "I shall give it to you." "When
you posses it, every first born ass shall be redeemed with a lamb or
you shall kill it." "Every first born son shall be redeemed and
when they ask why, you are to tell them the story of the Passover."
"This 'redemption' shall be as a mark upon you."
The chapter ends with instructions on the route that they were to take.
Verse 17 says they were not to take the short route. God made them go by way
of the Wilderness toward the Red Sea. The short route would have taken them
through Philista. This would have meant that they would have had to fight the
Philistines and the Lord knew that they were not ready for that, so He led them
by another route. As a guide, He led them by fire at night and by a cloud by
day. They took with them the bones of Joseph
