Then God tells Moses that He has set an Angel before them to lead them into the Promised Land. His job is to guard them and their job is to obey him. Anyone who does not will be blotted out. In this chapter a religious "hierarchy" is established:
When none of these were present, Joshua and Hur were to be in command. Many believe that Hur was the husband of Moses' sister Miriam.
Also established was the extent of the authority of each of these people. Moses was the only one allowed in the presence of God. Notice that the first time that he went up upon the mountain, the people remained at the bottom while Aaron, Na-dab Abi-hu and the 70 Elders went up the mountain about halfway. Then Moses separated himself from them and went alone to speak to the Lord. The second time, they all reach a point on the mountain where they can see God on what appeared to be a pavement of sapphires. Then Moses and Joshua go on further up the mountain where they remain for six days. Then Moses alone is called up the mountain where he remained for 40 days and where God gave him the "tablets of stone" with all the information found in the following 7 chapters.
