Chapter 26 has instructions for building the Tabernacle. Finally they were to build a place of worship. Because it had to be portable it was made lightweight. Also, it had to be easy to put up and take down. The Tabernacle was to be constructed of frames made of acacia wood, 15 feet high and 2 and one half feet wide. They were made to set in large bases of silver and be doweled together. The north and south sides contained 20 frames each. The west side had 6 of these frames plus 2 corner frames. The Tabernacle was to face the east and the east side would be made up of 5 pillars of acacia wood and overlaid with gold. Each pillar was to be set in a bronze base. The 5 pillars would be covered like a screen. Thus the Tabernacle would be 50 feet long by 20 feet wide. The outside of the three sides, north, south and west, would be covered with three layers, the first was to be made of fine twined linen, the second was to be made of goats hair and the last of leather made of rams and goats skins. The inside was to be divided into two rooms, the Holy Place at the entrance and the Holy of Holies in the back. They were to be separated by a veil of blue, purple and scarlet.
The Tabernacle was known by many names in the Old Testament. The following are some of those names.
The acacia wood came from a tree yielded gum or pitch also tanning extracts. It grew in warm regions and had leaves that looked like pods or lobes with white or yellow flower clusters. Acacia was the Greek name Akakia, Shittah (Shittim) was the Hebrew name.
