Chapter 40 contains the instructions for the erection of the Tabernacle and the placement of all the 27 items. "On the first day of the first month of the second year"... it had just been one year since they left Egypt, on that day Moses was instructed to set up the Tabernacle and place the furnishings as he had been instructed. The Courtyard was to be put in place and then Moses was to anoint the Tabernacle and all that was in it.
Then Moses offered himself to God as a sacrifice for the people but God said, "Whoever has sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book of life." Then The Lord sent a plague upon the people and He separated Himself from them, but Moses set up a tent outside the camp and everyone who sought the Lord's forgiveness could go out to the tent and receive it. Moses prayed and found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
Then he was to bring in Aaron and his sons to the door of the Tabernacle, wash them and put upon Aaron the Holy Garments and anoint and consecrate him that he might serve as priest. Then Aaron's sons were to be dressed and anointed also. So Moses did all that the Lord had instructed him to do.
After all had been completed, Moses, Aaron and his sons washed their hands and feet as God had commanded them and they offered up a burnt offering and a cereal offering unto the Lord. Then the "Cloud" covered the Tabernacle and the "Glory" of the Lord filled it.
Throughout their entire journey, for the next 39 years, whenever the Cloud departed, the people followed, the "Cloud by day, the "Fire" by night, both in plain sight of all the people.
