This chapter describes the Jews in bondage in Babylon and the false hopes and memories that they had allowed to come into their hearts. Most still had Jerusalem in their hearts and some of the more pious looked to Jerusalem in faith but the presumptuous ones looked in pride and flattered themselves that they would shortly return. Some even doubted the wisdom of those who surrendered the city years before to the Chaldeans. Here the Lord gives the Prophet a very clear picture of the besieging of Jerusalem by the Chaldean Army. Two things are represented to him in a vision. One, the Lord instructs the Prophet as to the instruments that he was used against the city. The number of the days of the siege of Jerusalem would be symbolized by the number of days that he laid, first on his left side and then on his right side. Secondly, the length of the famine that raged within the city was symbolized by the Prophet eating very course food for 390 days.
