In spite of all that God has told Ezekiel about the destruction of Jerusalem, he still finds it hard to believe. In this chapter, God takes certain steps to assure him that what was prophesied did come true and that there was nothing any one could have done about it. Jerusalem is compared to the branches of a vine that were cut off and burned in a fire. The parallel is very descriptive and the explanation very dreadful.
There was a tree called the "vine tree" which was used for firewood. That was its purpose and once it was burned it was not fit for any thing else. So, the Lord says, are the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Because of their sins God will send them from one fire to another and the fire will devour them. It they escape the sword of the Babylonians, they will die of the famine. If they escape death from starvation, they will die from pestilence. Their doom was sealed and they and the land were laid to waste.
